Who Are We?

The Fraser Valley Group is made up of local host families. Through our national organization (CRFCVB) we invite children from Belarus to the Fraser Valley for a health respite away from the lingering effects of Chernobyl. Each family brings a unique outlook to our group which helps provide a solid foundation for achieving our common goal. We are homemakers, retirees, home business operators and professionals. Regardless of economic status we all commit to fundraising for the better part of a year, attend monthly meetings and most importantly commit to hosting a child for a six week period during the summer months. Once in the home the children are integrated into each family making for some interesting new family dynamics. As well as meeting (in most cases surpassing) the daily needs of the children, host parents ensure that out of pocket dental care and eyewear needs are looked after during their stay.

The children range in age from eight to sixteen and are chosen by the "Trace of Chernobyl Fund" or the "Belorussian Charitable Fund" (both located in Belarus) based on severity of need. First time visiting children must not have reached the age of 12 by date of departure from Belarus. The children are invited to come to Canada on a basis which is consistent with the criteria set down by our national organization. As well, they must be in reasonably good health (by Belorussian standards) and able to withstand the rigors of travel. It can take up to 30 hours of continuous travel for the children to reach the Fraser Valley.
